LET THE EARTH BREATHE !

Scientists have said we only have 3 to 7 years left before climate change will be irreversible and the impacts will be inevitable. This is due to the use of fossil fuel, which is a non-renewable type of energy that is dug up from the ground. Fossil fuel and global warming are closely associated with each other and is the main factor contributing to global warming. The presence of high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere results in an increase in the amount of heat and temperature on the surface of the Earth. This is because carbon dioxide traps heat obtained from sunlight and it does not dissipate out of the atmosphere, this process is known as the greenhouse effect. Since fossil fuels are hydrocarbons (made from hydrogen and carbon), burning fossil fuels releases an enormous amount of carbon dioxide into the air. When there's a major rise in the percentage of carbon dioxide in the air, the amount of heat captured by the carbon dioxide gas also increases. This, in turn, results in an overall rise in the surface temperature of the Earth, which is additionally referred to as global warming. Scientists have said that since 1970, global surface temperatures have risen faster than in any other 50 year period in the past 2000 years. The atmosphere has risen to 1.1C, compared to the safe global limit being 1.5C. If the usage of fossil fuels hasn't been banned or heavily monitored, we will begin to see the effects listed down below more drastically than they already are.

Global Warming Effects On The Enviorment.

  • Sea Levels rising.

  • More intense weather; Wildfires, Droughts, Acid Rain etc.

  • Ocean Acidification.

  • Warmer land and air.

  • Changes in Ocean Currents.

  • Serious Floods.

  • Risks to water supplies.

  • Damage to infastructure. ( Buildings, Roads etc. )

  • Dangerously hot and cold summers and winters.

  • Increased risk of droughts and forest fires.

  • Food scarcity, especially fish and crops.

  • Increase of pests.

Global Warming Effects Oceans and The Artic.

Oceans absorb 90% of the extra heat generated by human influence. However, when water heats up, it expands to take up more volume. So, when oceans heat up, they expand too, causing the sea level to rise. We also have extra water flowing into the ocean from melting ice sheets and glaciers. Between 1901 and 2018, the global average sea level has risen by around 20 centimetres. This causes our coastlines to erode, leaving Coastline City's and Towns vulnerable to serious flooding.

Some parts of the planet, such as the north and south pole, warm more quickly than other places. At the poles, glaciers and ice sheets reflect energy from the sun into space. So, when there is less ice, less energy from the sun is reflected away. The area then heats even more quickly, causing even more ice to melt.

The ice in the Arctic is melting fast. It is already 65% thinner than it was in 1975. Late summer Arctic sea ice area is currently the smallest in at least 1,000 years. If we do not reduce emissions soon, we could see ice-free summers in the Arctic by the middle of this century.

When ice sheets and glaciers melt, freshwater flows into the sea. As well as making the sea level rise, freshwater also reduces the salinity (saltiness) of the water, which can slow or change ocean currents.

Oceans also absorb around 25% of the carbon dioxide that humans release into the air. The oceans then become less alkaline, a process called 'ocean acidification'. Ocean acidification is bad because it can have negative effects on marine organisms, like coral and plankton, which are an important part of the food chain.

Things you can do to help.

  • Delete unwanted emails.

  • Turn off outlets and lights when you aren't using them.

  • Stop buying plastic water bottles, buy a water filter and a reusable water bottle.

  • Buy and use energy efficient lightbulbs.

  • Use Ecosia instead of Google. Ecosia uses the money from ads and searches to plant trees, which in turn helps absorb carbon dioxide ( the main contributor to global warming ) and create more oxygen.

  • An alternative to Ecosia is OceanHero, that protects the ocean with every search.

  • Take showers instead of baths.

  • Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth.

  • Don't use your aircon or heating unless necessary.

  • When you are washing clothes, keep the temperature at 20 degrees or lower. ( This also keeps clothes looking newer! )

  • Walk or use a bike instead of driving.

  • Eat more vegetables.

  • Reuse & Recycle plastics.

  • For all the kpop stans, DON'T BULK BUY ALBUMS IF YOU ARE JUST GOING TO KEEP THEM. ITS A WASTE OF PAPER.

  • For all the crypto weirdos, DON'T BUY NFT'S AND MINE CRYPTO. IT'S INCREDIBLY HARMFUL TO THE ENVIORMENT AND USES UP RIDICULOUS AMOUNTS OF ELECTRICITY.

  • Plant trees.

  • Buy plants.

  • Buy second-hand clothes and donate clothes when you want to get rid of them.

  • Buy crops locally and only buy ones in season. ( Buying out of season fruits and vegetables often means they are shipped from a different country. )

  • Also, plant your own vegetables and fruits.

  • Create petitions and donate to organisations when and if you can.

  • Share this carrd and spread awareness to this incredibly serious problem.
